Seemed interesting, same area, more coverage, what the hell, why not. Hall has this super light and fast little dot that "goes bang". Looks a lot like the Suhl that seems damn near unbeatable here lately. Kind of both ends of the spectrum. Ivan has a killer gun with a half moon that follows the outer rim and is wide. BTW, I keep hearing about the new 'killer" design that DiOrio has come up with. Wouldn't that be some sheet (as ole slick says) if it looked like Ivan's design. I'm sure Ivan would just love having a Calfee cohort claim credit for his footprint.
I am fixing to grind, cut, edm or somehow process a couple of new pins (maybe 650 or so with extras ) for the batch of 2500X's I am finishing up. For now I will go with what has been proven to work. (Jason's gun seems to like it). I am going to play a little with Ivan's idea in addition on my gun. I finally have a few extra pins I can play with for now. I am curious if it takes more spring.
What kind of wisdom or test data does anyone have out there? Footprint size versus spring force versus pin fall versus temperature vs ammo type etc etc.
It's getting on winter, let's see what we can do here now that most of us aren't shooting.
Ivanhoe:
Rimfire Accuracy, now think about that for a minute.
It's not just the shape of the pin, but that is important. It's about that pin hitting the case where it needs to while delivering the correct amount of energy for that particular lot of ammo. This shoot the moon pin design is very forgiving and increases consistency of getting constant ignition across a much larger area, This is what I call a big part of the timing of a rifle and everything else that follows.
When I got the call that someone was about to break out the greatest thing in the world and it was something I've being working on for over 5 years. They were also going to put it in a Turbo or a Turbo clone and not corrected it's mechanical design problem. Here's what's going to happen, if they put it together with a spring that's working well with there old pin, it's probably going to start snapping. Then if they put that .051" wire spring that's 2.100" plus long it will start out shooting like the house is on fire if the shape is correct and in the right location, but guess what very, very soon its all going to go away again.
Here is part of the problem, people are going to try this pin shape, the people that try it on the 2500x actions are more than likely going to see positive results if they watch closely. Can those results be made better by doing other things they sure can. This firing pin shape more than likely is not going to help you if you have a Turbo or Turbo clone unless you fix the other problems, how ever if you want to measure springs and put sets together cycle through and keep replacing springs as they FAIL HINT HINT you'll probably be fine. Another thing, when we have a big temperature swing, you don't think it's going change the amount energy delivered or the amount required for such change???
I think I'm right on this and Bob Cleveland can chime in and tell me if I'm wrong, Bob had a rifle he had not shot in years a Suhl, he started testing ammo in that gun and at that time found at least 3 or 4 lots that would shoot competitively, where this ignition thing is concern that made prefect since to me, that ammo was made at about the same time with the same or similar components. Those lots of ammo liked Bob's Suhl ignition system.
Some people are approaching this problem by trying to constantly move the trigger hanger and are having some success at it some times, but more times than not they end up on the bottom half of the ladder. When you move the trigger hanger your just not changing one thing, your changing about 4 things at once. That's making it pretty hard to figure out which one of the 4 things is giving positive results.
It won't surprise me at the people that will jump on this and then jump right back off on to the next latest greatest thing looking for that VOODOO magic that's going to make then shoot 2500's or 250 25X's on every card. I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but good luck!! By the way I am mad I didn't come up with the Name Voodoo for a rimfire Rifle I think they will do well.
Hope this helps!!
